  GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam
The GeoForschungsZentrum Potsdam (GFZ) ist Germany's National Research Centre for Geosciences. It is financed by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research and the Ministry of Science, Research and Culture, Brandenburg. The GFZ Potsdam, which is part of the Helmholtz Association, is active in all disciplines of geosciences – from geodetics to geoengineering. Its work is accomplished with the aid of a close interdisciplinary network with related natural sciences such as physics, mathematics and chemistry as well as applied sciences such as rock mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulic engineering and engineering seismology.

Satellite technologies

The gravitation field of our planet can be detected precisely by using satellites and other remote sensing technologies.

Early warning systems

One focus of the GFZ’s work is in the field of natural dangers, especially earth quakes, floods, volcanos and tsunamis. The goal is to develop effective early warning systems.

Remote Sensing

In the field of optical remote sensing the GFZ operates an hyperspectral satellite in cooperation with the DLR (German Aerospace Center). From 2010 on the satellite project EnMAP will provide hyperspectral data from space.
